Ege Port Kuşadası Completes First Phase of Solar Energy Investment

Ege Port Kuşadası, operated by Global Ports Holding—the world’s largest cruise port operator—has successfully completed the first phase of its solar energy investment.

As part of its commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint, Ege Port Kuşadası has installed a rooftop solar power plant that will generate approximately 312,552 kWh of electricity annually. This milestone marks a significant step in the port’s broader strategy to transition entirely to renewable energy sources.

Commissioned with a total investment of $300,000 USD, the rooftop solar power plant comprises 426 solar panels and 5 inverters. The facility is expected to prevent 223 tons of carbon emissions each year.

The second phase of the project—a ground-mounted solar power plant to be constructed within the port—is scheduled for completion in late 2025. Once operational, it will enable Ege Port Kuşadası to meet 100% of its energy needs through renewable sources, achieving carbon neutrality in its energy consumption.

Aziz Güngör, Global Ports Holding East Med Regional Director and Ege Port Kuşadası General Manager, highlighted the significance of the project in the context of the cruise industry’s broader environmental goals. “The cruise industry is targeting net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. At Ege Port Kuşadası, one of the busiest cruise ports in East Med, we are proud to support this vision. With the completion of our solar power investment later this year, we will meet all of our energy needs from renewable sources, reaching net-zero emissions in our energy use,” he said.

This initiative underscores Global Ports Holding’s continued efforts to drive sustainability across its global network and contribute to a cleaner, greener future for the cruise industry.

Ege Port Kuşadası is Türkiye’s leading cruise port, serving as the main gateway to the ancient city of Ephesus—one of the most popular shore excursions in the Eastern Mediterranean. Strategically located on the Aegean coast, the port is a key hub for transit and turnaround operations, offering modern terminal facilities, shopping, and seamless access to historical and cultural attractions. Operated by Global Ports Holding since 2003, Ege Port Kuşadası has consistently ranked among the top ports in the region in terms of cruise traffic, welcoming hundreds of thousands of passengers and crew each year.
